Switzerland at 10 million: when media propaganda replaces democratic debate

What if the real problem wasn't the «10 Million Swiss Not» initiative, but the political and media system's stubborn refusal to face reality? Behind the alarmist slogans, accusations of an ’initiative of chaos,« and easy caricatures, a well-oiled machine is set in motion: discrediting those who dare to question immigration control and the country's demographic future. The article published by La Liberté and championed by its editor-in-chief François Mauron offers an almost caricatural illustration of this. Manipulations of language, ideological labels, and blatant omissions: one only needs to scratch the surface to see a media construction designed less to inform than to steer public debate. An analysis.

In a healthy democracy, the press ought to inform public debate. But when newspapers subsidised by public money transform into militant organs, the line between information and propaganda disappears. This is precisely what the article published on the 9 March 2026 in La Liberté under the guided pen of its editor-in-chief François Mauron, dedicated to the initiative «No to a Switzerland of 10 million!» carried in particular by the Fribourg National Councillor Nicolas Kolly.

Under the guise of political analysis, the text piles up approximations, rhetorical manipulations, and ideological caricatures. It therefore deserves to be dissected point by point.

«The UDC against everyone»: a media fabrication

The article uses one of the favourite rhetorical devices of the political-media system: presenting the UDC as «alone against everyone».

This formula is not an analysis: It's a narrative device.

It aims to give the impression that a party represents a fringe position, even though His/Her/Their theses are widely shared in the population.

Some facts:

  • The initiative «contre l’immigration de masse» was accepted by the people in 2014 with 50.3 % in favour.
  • Polls regularly show that’A majority of Swiss people consider immigration to be too high.
  • The UDC remains the first party in the country for over twenty years, around 28-30 % of voices.

Talking about a party «alone against all» therefore means to deny the democratic legitimacy of a considerable part of the Swiss electorate.

Reality is simpler:

A large part of the population believes that Switzerland must regain control of its demographics and immigration.

2. «Chaos Initiative»: Propaganda Labelling

Second procedure: apply a disqualifying label.

The expression «chaos initiative» is not a political argument. It's a Media label intended to shape the reader's perception even before they examine the text's content.

This technique is a classic in political communication:

Naming a project with an anxiety-inducing term discredits the debate before it even takes place.

Subsidised media and certain economic lobbies have widely used this strategy against:

  • the initiative against mass immigration
  • The limitation initiative
  • and today the initiative «No 10-million Switzerland».

Taking this vocabulary back, La Liberté does not describe a debate.

She is participating in a political campaign.

3. The myth of the «isolationist party»

The Swiss Conservative Party «isolationist party» also falls under caricature.

Switzerland is :

  • one of the the most open economies in the world
  • with plus de 60 % de ses exportations vers l’Union européenne
  • and hundreds of international trade agreements.

The debate is therefore not about opening up the country.

It is about Switzerland's ability to control its migration policy and its political sovereignty.

To refuse uncontrolled immigration is not isolationism.

It's Demographic and economic realism.

4. An official promise betrayed: 8,000 against 80,000

When free movement of people was introduced, the authorities presented very modest estimates.

We were talking about approximately 8,000 net entries per year.

The reality was quite different:

  • up to 80,000 net admissions annually in certain years
  • around 800,000 more inhabitants in ten years
  • near 1 million in twelve years

The Swiss population has grown:

  • about 7.2 million in 2000
  • à nearly 9 million today.

Switzerland thus knows one of the fastest population growths in Western Europe.

5. Dumping social and pressure on the middle class

The free movement of people has profoundly transformed the labour market.

She created a direct competition between Swiss workers and European labour.

Consequences:

  • Downward pressure on certain wages
  • rise in precarious contracts
  • increased competition for young people entering the job market.

This is precisely what Nicolas Kolly criticised the erosion of apprenticeships in his question to the Federal Council., made worse by the massive arrival of already trained foreign workers.

In some sectors, businesses prefer to recruit skilled workers from abroad rather than training Swiss apprentices.

6. Three major economic effects

Freedom of movement produces three structural effects:

Job insecurity

Increased competition is weakening some positions.

Wage stagnation

The increase in the labour supply mechanically slows down wage growth.

3. Rent explosion

The strong population growth is putting massive pressure on the housing market.

Today

  • Switzerland experiences A structural housing shortage
  • Rents are rising sharply in urban areas
  • the infrastructures are saturated.

Result:

The middle class is seeing its purchasing power shrink.

7. An increasingly heavy tax burden

Another aspect often overlooked concerns the increasing tax burden linked to population growth.

A population that is increasing very rapidly requires:

  • More infrastructure
  • more schools
  • more transport
  • more public services
  • more administration.

All of this needs to be financed.

In concrete terms, this translates to:

  • higher taxes
  • new taxes
  • an explosion of public spending.

The cantons and municipalities must finance:

  • the construction of schools
  • the expansion of public transport
  • road infrastructure
  • Social benefits.

However, these costs are principally supported by Swiss taxpayers.

In other words:

Massive population growth is leading to a constant increase in the tax burden for the middle class.

8. A facade of prosperity

It is often said that immigration would be essential for Swiss prosperity.

But a paradox arises:

  • the Total GDP increases
  • but Purchasing power per capita is stagnating or falling.

This phenomenon is well known to economists:

Rapid population growth can increase overall wealth while reducing wealth per capita.

In other words:

Switzerland can become richer on paper while impoverishing its middle class.

Sovereignty cannot be shared.

The article states that Swiss sovereignty would remain «full and entire» despite European constraints.

That's a fallacy.

A country is:

  • So be it, sovereign
  • be subject to external standards.

The automatic adoption of European law would mean a direct loss of legislative sovereignty.

Direct democracy would then become subject to foreign rules.

10. The role of economic lobbies

The main driver of current migration policy is not the interests of the population.

These are economic lobbies.

Organisations such as:

  • Economiesuisse
  • The Federation of Romandy Businesses (FER)

invest millions in political lobbying in order to maintain a model based on:

  • rapid population growth
  • unlimited access to the European labour market.

Their objective is clear:

maintain an abundant and cheap workforce.

11. Eisenhower's Warning

In 1961, the American president Dwight D. Eisenhower warned against the influence of military-industrial complex On democracy.

Today, in Switzerland, the threat is taking another form.

The main danger comes from the alliance between certain economic lobbies and part of the political and media system, determined to steer the country towards even closer integration with the European Union.

Nicolas Kolly: Political Courage

In this context, the approach of Nicolas Kolly deserves to be highlighted.

When lifting:

  • the question of learning
  • Job market competition
  • The demographic consequences of free movement

it recalls a simple truth:

Swiss democracy belongs to the people, not to lobbyists.

Conclusion: the democratic awakening

The debate surrounding the initiative «No 10-million Switzerland» goes far beyond the demographic question.

He asks a fundamental question:

Who decides Switzerland's future?

  • the citizens
  • or a politico-economic system determined to impose unlimited population growth?

Switzerland was built on popular sovereignty, responsibility and proportionality.

If this initiative were to be accepted, it would not be «chaos».

She would be A brutal but salutary reminder: in a democracy, it is the people who set the limits.

And this time again, The people will have the final word.
