Bilaterals III: when the Fribourg employers fabricate fear to gag the people

When a chamber of employers publicly calls on a political party to «fight», when a subsidised media relays a carefully calibrated alarmist discourse without distance, and when any dissenting voice is disqualified even before the debate, this is no longer an economic discussion - it's a political conditioning operation. Under the guise of defending prosperity, a well-honed mechanism is activated: fear, amalgams, figures brandished like weapons, and absolute silence on the essentials. What is at stake here goes far beyond Bilateral III. It is a life-size test of the Swiss people's ability to remain sovereign in the face of a coordinated offensive by the economic, political and media elites.

The scene is revealing. At Bluefactory, the Fribourg Chamber of Commerce and Industry is orchestrating a unanimous panel - business leaders, elected representatives, rector, scientists - all carefully aligned for a single mission: designate an internal enemy and explicitly call for it to be «fought». The enemy? THE SVP. The message? The Bilaterals III are vital, indisputable, and any opposition is ignorance, lies or ideology.

The staging is deliberate. 30th January 2026, La Liberté uncritically relays this employers' call for political mobilisation against a Swiss party - a rare and deeply worrying event in a militia democracy.

1) An organised false debate: sacrificing pluralism

It was not a debate. The deputy director of the CCIF admits: «We had to react». Translation: neutralising speech deemed dangerous even before the people had access to the final text of Bilaterals III. There were no opponents, no independent lawyers, no representatives of critical SMEs, no specialists in legal sovereignty. A high-flying stage... in the art of socialising.

2) Amalgamation as a method: prosperity = submission

The hammered argument: «52 % of Fribourg's exports go to the EU». The figure is correct. The conclusion is misleading.

Exporting to the EU does not involve the dynamic adoption of the law, foreign jurisdictional supervision or automatic sanction mechanisms. Switzerland exports because it is competitive, innovative and reliable. not because it aligns itself politically. The proof: our trade surpluses exist without membership, and bilateral agreements I & II never involved abandoning democratic primacy now required.

3) Blackmailing innovation: Horizon Europe as an alibi

Horizon Europe, the «Champions League» and threatened research are cited. The facts: Switzerland has already been excluded. for political reasons, not economic. Giving up today means institutionalising blackmail In the future, any democratic dissent could be punished. Free science does not thrive on obedience.

4) The instrumentalized entrepreneurial narrative

One entrepreneur cites a loss of 15 million euros due to third-country status. Respect for experience. But an individual trajectory is no basis for a constitutional overhaul. Economic policy is not decided on the basis of a single case, however high-profile it may be. Otherwise, we govern by emotion - exactly what these same circles criticise their opponents for.

5) The heart of the matter carefully avoided: sovereignty

That evening, no one mentioned the hard core of Bilaterals III :

  • dynamic adoption of foreign law,
  • mechanism for settling disputes outside sovereignty,
  • automatic penalties,
  • bypassing the referendum through economic pressure.

The Federal Constitution is clear. The people are the Sovereign. Political rights are guaranteed by the’article 136 Cst. Any architecture that strips these rights of their substance is not modernisation, This is a divestiture.

6) Calling for a party to be «fought»: democratic drift

When a councillor of state speaks of a «fight» against the SVP, when a chamber of employers openly pledges its opposition to a party, when a subsidised media relays - without hindsight - - 'the truth' about the SVP. it's no longer economics, it's political engineering. And it targets a single player: the only party that explicitly defends the primacy of the Sovereign, legal independence and direct democracy.

Conclusion

Fear is not a programme. Blackmail is not a vision. Unanimity is not a debate.

Bilaterals III commit the democratic architecture of the Confederation. They deserve better than locked panels, sporting metaphors and militant editorials. They demand an informed choice. by the people, for the people.

Because in Switzerland, whatever some people think, the Sovereign does not fight.
