RTS-SRF: when the Swiss public service becomes a relay for foreign propaganda

There are silences that betray.

And there are editorial choices that entail democratic responsibility.

RTS (SRF), funded by billions of Swiss francs taken from Swiss citizens every year, has long ceased to fulfil its mission of providing pluralist information on the war in Ukraine. Instead, it aligns its stories with the official narrative of the European Union and NATO - without critical distance, without contradictory debate, without respect for the public service remit.

One fact is revealing: former colonel Jacques Baud, a strategic intelligence specialist and former UN and NATO staff member, has never been seriously invited to present his analyses on the major Swiss media, But he is regularly in demand abroad. But why? Because his analyses are disturbing. Because they do not fit into the imposed ideological framework.

That's not journalism.

This is political selection of words.

A public service without a mandate to wage war on narratives

SRF has no constitutional mandate, no democratic vocation to relay pro-EU propaganda or to take part in an information war. Switzerland is a neutral state. Its public broadcasting service should reflect this neutrality, not erode it.

And what do we find?

  • A systematic demonisation any dissenting voices.
  • A misinterpretation of critical analysis as “pro-Russian propaganda”.”.
  • An almost total absence of serious strategic debate on the causes, responsibilities and possible ways out of the conflict.

The recent placement of Jacques Baud - as before Xavier Moreau, French geopolitical analyst - in political stigmatisation and European sanctions marks a worrying turning point.

It is no longer the content of the arguments that is being fought, but the very right to formulate them.

The EU is moving up a gear... because its narrative is collapsing

These manoeuvres are revealing.

When a government starts sanctioning analysts, restricting the circulation of ideas and criminalising dissent, it is not a sign of strength. It's an admission of weakness.

George Orwell put it with chilling lucidity:

«In times of universal deception, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.»

The European Union, led by a unelected technocratic caste, is locked into a headlong rush. Unable to accept the failure of its strategy, it is now trying to locking down the information space to artificially maintain a pro-war consensus.

Jacques Ellul, the French thinker on propaganda, once wrote:

«Propaganda is all the more effective for denying that it is propaganda.»

And here we are.

A serious drift for Switzerland

By uncritically relaying this binary vision of the world, RTS-SRF betrays public trust and undermines the very foundations of Swiss direct democracy: pluralism, debate and the sovereignty of citizens' judgement.

Neutrality is not a moral option.

It's a survival strategy for a small state at the heart of Europe.

By refusing to open its airwaves to analysts like Jacques Baud, SRF is not protecting democracy. It weakens it.

Conclusion

When a public service stops informing and starts guiding, it ceases to be legitimate.

When a political union sanctions words instead of responding to arguments, it is preparing its own downfall.

Propaganda always goes up a notch before the narrative behind it collapses.

History has shown this. It will show it again.

be a sovereign neutral state - or become a mere intermediary in a conflict that is not its own.
