Recycled into a supranational institution that claims to defend democracy while neutralising peoples, freedoms while monitoring opinions, the law while bypassing sovereignty. His accession to the summit of the Council of Europe is not a consecration - it is a symptom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8937\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It was a daring move.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8938\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Leaving the Federal Council by the back door, after one of the most authoritarian episodes in Switzerland's recent history, to be recycled at the top of a supranational institution... claiming to embody democracy, human rights and the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8939\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Alain Berset did it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8940\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The former Federal Councillor, now <strong>Secretary General of the Council of Europe<\/strong>, now presents himself as the enlightened guardian of European values. A role tailor-made for the man who, during Covid, trivialised coercion, state disinformation and the stigmatisation of opponents - without ever being held to account.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember8941\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Is the Council of Europe \u201cprofoundly Swiss\u201d? Is that so?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember8942\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Alain Berset says it without batting an eyelid:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"ember8943\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__blockquote\"><p><em>\u00abThe Council of Europe is profoundly Swiss.\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember8944\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">This is a major political untruth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8945\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The Council of Europe is :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the <strong>ECHR<\/strong> which imposes decisions on Switzerland that run counter to the will of the people,<\/li>\n<li>a <strong>foreign case law<\/strong> which arrogates to itself the right to correct our direct democracy,<\/li>\n<li>a supranational logic in which the people become a problem to be managed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember8947\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">To present this as a natural extension of the Swiss model is either naive or manipulative.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember8948\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">\u201cCoolitude, censorship and democratic contempt<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember8949\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In the face of American criticism of freedom-destroying excesses in Europe, Berset calls for... <em>coolitude<\/em> :<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"ember8950\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__blockquote\"><p><em>\u00abWe need to listen to criticism from Washington without confirming Donald Trump's assessments.\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember8951\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Translation: listen, but above all don't change anything.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8952\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">For while it preaches serenity, the Council of Europe :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>legitimate <strong>combating \u201cdisinformation\u201d<\/strong>, a vague concept that has become a political weapon,<\/li>\n<li>supports <strong>democratic pacts<\/strong> used to monitor opinions, platforms and debates,<\/li>\n<li>is part of a dynamic in which <strong>the state claims to decide what is true and what is false<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember8954\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Absolute irony: the man who publicly stated that the <strong>Covid certificate proving the absence of contagiousness<\/strong> - a false claim - is now the arbiter of democratic truth.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember8955\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Ukraine, armaments and double talk<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember8956\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Berset aligns himself without nuance with the dominant discourse:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"ember8957\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__blockquote\"><p><em>\u00abThe greatest danger to Europe comes from Russia. It is legitimate for Europe to rearm strongly.\u00bb<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember8958\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">But in the same breath, he calls for dialogue, peace and responsibility.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8959\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Always this disembodied moral rhetoric, never submitted to the vote of the people, never confronted with the concrete consequences.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8960\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Switzerland, a neutral state, has <strong>no vocation<\/strong> to align itself with this logic of blocs. However, it is gradually being dragged along by the likes of Berset - without a popular mandate.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember8961\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">The perfect recycling of a man of the system<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember8962\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The route is clear:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vertical management of Covid,<\/li>\n<li>no self-criticism,<\/li>\n<li>honorary awards,<\/li>\n<li>then golden exile in a supranational institution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember8964\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">While <strong>confidence in the media and institutions is plummeting<\/strong>, At a time when almost one Swiss in two is turning away from traditional information, Berset explains that the danger comes from... ill-informed citizens.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8965\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Never disconnected elites.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ember8966\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember8967\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Alain Berset has not been \u201cpromoted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8968\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It was <strong>recycled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8969\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Recycled in a bureaucratic Europe that confuses democracy with conformity, human rights with moral governance, public debate with control of opinion.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8970\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>This illustrates a worrying trend:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8971\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">when a politician can trample on the sovereignty of the people and then pose as the guarantor of freedoms elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8972\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Switzerland deserves better than exiled preachers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8973\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It deserves leaders <strong>accountable to the people<\/strong>, not endorsed by the structures he never chose.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember8975\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>We analyse what the media keep quiet.
